Find the sale price after a percentage off, see how much you save, and add sales tax to get what you will actually pay.
How it works
The amount saved is the original price × discount ÷ 100. The sale price is the original price minus that saving. If you enter a sales tax rate, tax is added to the sale price, which is how most US stores charge it.
Worked example
A $120 coat is 25% off and local sales tax is 8%. The saving is 120 × 25 ÷ 100 = $30, so the sale price is $90. Tax is 90 × 8 ÷ 100 = $7.20, so you pay $97.20 at the till.
Stacked discounts
Two discounts do not simply add up. "20% off, then an extra 10% off" is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 becomes $80, then $72, a total saving of 28%. To check a stacked offer, run the calculator twice, using the first sale price as the second original price.
Shopping tips
- Compare the final price, not the percentage. 40% off a higher starting price can cost more than 20% off elsewhere.
- "Buy one, get one half price" is a 25% discount on the pair.
- Check the price history where you can, because some sales start from an inflated original price.

How do I calculate a percentage off?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage, divide by 100, and subtract the result from the price.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, $60 after 25% off was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?
In most US states sales tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works.
What is 30% off $50?
The saving is $15, so the sale price is $35.
