Scientific Calculator
Trigonometry, logarithms, roots and powers in one expression box.
How it works
Enter an expression such as sin(30) + sqrt(16) or 2^8. Use the Degrees box to switch between degrees and radians for sin, cos and tan. ln is the natural logarithm and log is base 10.
Worked example
To find the height of a tree, stand 20 metres away and measure a 35 degree angle to the top. Height = distance × tan(angle). Type 20*tan(35) with Degrees ticked to get about 14.0 metres. Add your eye height if you need the full height from the ground.
Tips
- Check the Degrees box before using sin, cos or tan. Most school and building problems use degrees.
- Write roots as sqrt(49) and logs as log(1000) for base 10 or ln(10) for natural logs.
- Chain steps in one line, for example sqrt(3^2+4^2) gives 5.
Frequently asked questions
Is sin(30) really 0.5?
Yes, when Degrees is ticked. Untick it to work in radians.
How do I write a power?
Use the ^ key, for example 2^10 equals 1,024.
What is the difference between ln and log?
ln is the natural logarithm (base e). log is base 10, so log(1000) is 3.
Why do I get an error?
Usually a missing bracket or an unknown word. Close every ( and use only the keys shown.
