Tip Calculator

Work out the tip on a bill and split the total evenly between everyone at the table.

How it works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage and divided by 100. Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people to see what each person pays.

Worked example

Your bill is $85 and you want to leave 18%. 85 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.30 tip, so the total is $100.30. Split between two people, each pays $50.15.

How much should I tip?

Customs vary by country and service. In the United States, these are common guides:

In much of Europe, Australia and Asia, service is often included or tips are smaller, so check the bill for a service charge first.

Quick mental maths

To find 10%, move the decimal point one place left. Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, 20% is $12.80 and 15% is $9.60.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Run the calculator once for each person's share of the food, using 1 as the number of people.

What if a service charge is already included?

A service charge is usually the tip, so you do not need to add another unless you want to reward great service.

Can I round the amount each person pays?

Yes. Rounding up to the nearest dollar per person is common and adds a little extra to the tip.
