Percentage Calculator
Find a percent of a number, what percent one number is of another, and percent change.
How it works
Enter two numbers and see three answers at once. x% of y is x × y ÷ 100. The share is x ÷ y × 100. Percent change from x to y is (y − x) ÷ x × 100.
Worked example
A jacket costs $80 and is 25% off. Enter 25 as the first number and 80 as the second. The first result, 20, is the discount, so you pay $60. Now enter 80 and 60: the change result is −25%, confirming the price fell by a quarter.
Tips
- A percent change from 50 to 75 is +50%, but from 75 back to 50 is only −33.3%. The starting number matters.
- For a tip, use 15 or 20 as the first number and the bill as the second.
- Percent points and percent are different: moving from 10% to 12% is 2 percentage points but a 20% increase.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a discount?
Enter the discount as x and the price as y. The first result is the amount taken off.
What does a negative change mean?
It means the second number is smaller than the first.
How do I add a percentage to a number?
Work out the percentage with the first result, then add it to your number. Adding 20% to 150 gives 150 + 30 = 180.
Why is the percent change not symmetrical?
Because each change is measured against its own starting value.
